Stars in Europe - Morocco - Transfer - Bouaddi moved from Lille to Manchester City

Ayyoub Bouaddi

The Roots
Bouaddi was born in Senlis, France, to a Moroccan family of Shilha Berber origin with roots in Tiznit. In June 2023, at the Élysée Palace, he won the fourth eloquence competition for French football academies. He also earned a high school diploma in mathematics and physics through distance learning.

The Lille Years
After starting out as a child in Creil, Bouaddi joined Lille's academy in 2021 and signed his first professional contract in August 2023. On 5 October 2023, he debuted in a goalless Europa Conference League draw against KÍ. At 16 years and 3 days, he became the youngest player ever to feature in a European club competition game, and the youngest to play an official match for Lille, breaking a record Joël Henry had held since 1978. Just 17 days later, he became the youngest player in Ligue 1 since Joël Fréchet in 1981. On his 17th birthday, 2 October 2024, he started a Champions League league phase match against Real Madrid, a 1:0 home win. Lille were short of midfielders, so he played alongside captain Benjamin André and was one of the best players on the pitch. After the final whistle, the Lille ultras sang Joyeux Anniversaire for him. In December 2025, he extended his contract until June 2029. In January 2026, he became the youngest player to reach 50 Ligue 1 appearances for Lille, breaking Eden Hazard's record.

The Choice
Bouaddi came through France's youth setup and captained the under-21 side. On 15 May 2026, the Moroccan federation announced that FIFA had approved his switch of allegiance to Morocco. Eleven days later, he was named in the 26-player World Cup squad.

On the World Stage
Bouaddi made his World Cup debut in the opening 1-1 draw with Brazil. In the quarter-final against France, the country he once represented, he became the first African teenager to make five World Cup appearances, at 18 years and 280 days.

The Style
A versatile midfielder known for his composure under pressure, accurate passing, and confidence on the ball. Primarily a holding midfielder, he can dictate play from deep and also cover at right back.

The Closer
A French-born midfielder, a Moroccan heart, and a record-breaking start. City didn't just buy a talent. They bought the future of the midfield.
