Kyah Simon scored twice as Australia kept their Women's World Cup Group D hopes alive by beating Nigeria.

The Matildas, who lost their opener 3:1 to the USA, led when Lisa De Vanna picked out Simon after a brilliant dribble and the striker clipped her shot over keeper Precious Dede.

Unmarked Simon sealed the win in Winnipeg when she converted Sam Kerr's ball over the top from close range.

Laura Alleway hit the crossbar late on as Australia dominated.

Nigeria are on one point after their 3:3 draw with Sweden on Monday.

Liverpool forward Asisat Oshoala, the first BBC Women's Footballer of the Year, was unable to inspire her country and fired wide with a close-range shot at the far post at 1:0.

Substitute Ugo Njoku was lucky to avoid a red card when she elbowed Kerr in the face.

There was confusion when referee Stephanie Frappart blew the final whistle one minute into stoppage time, despite the board indicating there would be four times as much.

Both coaches looked uncertain whether the game was over, but both sets of players shook hands and came off the pitch.
