STARS IN EUROPE - CAMEROON - CLUB - Cameroonian Assou-Ekotto signs for Metz

FC Metz Benoit Assou-Ekotto

Benoit Assou-Ekotto is staying in the French league

Cameroonian Benoit Assou-Ekotto has signed a one-year deal with newly-promoted French Ligue 1 side Metz.

The 32-year-old left-back joins as a free agent after a short spell with rivals St Etienne last season.

Assou-Ekotto, who has 28 caps for the Indomitable Lions, comes in as cover for the injured Matthieu Udol.

"The experienced defender will strengthen a position troubled by the long-term absence of Matthew Udol," Metz said on their website.

English Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur signed Assou-Ekotto from French side Lens in June 2006.

He spent nine years at White Hart Lane making 205 appearances and scoring four goals for the North London side.

He played on loan at Queens Park Rangers in the 2013/14 season.

Assou-Ekotto has not played for Cameroon since the 2014 World Cup in Brazil when he was involved in an argument with his team-mate Benjamin Moukandjo and even appeared to headbutt him.
