STARS IN EUROPE - GHANA - CLUB - Swansea welcomes André Ayew signing

SWANSEA CITY ANDRÉ AYEW

Swansea City captain Ashley Williams says the signing of Marseille and Ghana forward Andre Ayew is a statement of intent by the club.

Ayew, 25, the 2011 BBC African Footballer of the Year, has won 62 caps, scoring 11 goals.

He joins Garry Monk's side on a four-year contract, having come to the end of his Marseille deal.

"It shows that the club is going in the right direction again," centre-back Williams said. "It's a big signing."

Ayew, son of Marseille and Ghana legend Abedi Pele, is set for a medical at Swansea this week.

Bafetimbi Gomis is the senior striker at Swansea, after Nelson Oliveira returned to Benfica following his loan spell and with Wilfried Bony having been sold to Manchester City last January.

"We obviously needed some strikers because Bafe is on his own, so we'll definitely welcome him to the club," Williams added.

Swansea City will begin the 2015-2016 Premier League season away to champions Chelsea and will finish on 15 May at home to Manchester City.
